Stars stay alive with Derby win

The Melbourne Stars recorded a remarkable win over the Melbourne Renegades to stay in the hunt for finals.

The 42-run victory marked the Stars' fourth win in a row, as they remain undefeated in 2025 and bounced back from a 0-5 start to BBL|14.

Glenn Maxwell was the hero yet again with 90 runs from just 52 balls including 10 sixes.

After 11 overs the Stars were 7-75, before Maxwell put on an 81-run stand partnership with Usama Mir, despite the Pakistan international not scoring a run.

The Stars fast bowlers were able to put the pressure on early in the Renegades' batting innings. Mark Steketee took two wickets in a 10-ball second over.

Steketee finished the night with a superb 5-17 while Joel Paris also took an economical 3-13 from his four overs.

Peter Siddle landed a crucial blow taking the wicket of Renegades captain Will Sutherland, while Beau Webster also picked a wicket as the Stars bowled the Renegades out for 123 with one ball remaining.

The Stars have a week to wait until their final match of the BBL regular season against the Hurricanes on Sunday January 19 at the MCG, with finals ramifications set to become clear in the coming days.
