The Game at a Glance
The Stars won the bat flip and chose to field, and the Renegades took no time finding the boundary. Finch and Harris looked dangerous early, until DJ Bravo sent Harris back to the bench with an outstanding one-handed catch in the circle. Aaron Finch survived just two more deliveries before a Nic Maddinson’s brilliant diving catch on the boundary saw his return to the dug-out. Sam Harvey and Cameron White managed just 1 run between them as Jackson Bird bowled a double-wicket maiden to see the Stars restrict the ‘Gades to 4-39 at the end of the powerplay. Marcus Stoinis finished with the best bowling figures of 3-19, and the Stars bowled the Renegades out for 121 in the 20th over.
The Stars got off to a shaky start, with Ben Dunk bowled by Nabi without scoring in the first over. Peter Handscomb followed a few overs later, only managing 8 runs before he was caught by Cameron White. Maxwell and Stoinis looked a promising pair at the end of the powerplay, but Maxwell was run out for just 7 runs and the Stars looked in trouble at 3-35. Marcus Stoinis and Nic Maddinson led the way for the Stars during the middle overs, and their impressive partnership was brought to an end when Maddinson was caught in the deep. Stoinis and DJ Bravo saw the Stars to the finish line, and the Stars won by 6 wickets, with Stoinis taking home player of the match honours for his incredible effort with bat and ball.
With the Ball
Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris took no time finding the boundary early, and the Renegades wuickly shot up to 0-30 in the third over. The Renegades seemed unstoppable, until the Stars two international players combined to dismiss Marcus Harris for just 15 runs. DJ Bravo took a stunning one-handed catch, timing his jump perfectly and giving Liam Plunkett his first wicket of the night. The wickets then started tumbling for the Renegades, with Aaron Finch dismissed the very next over by Jackson Bird for just 14 runs. He was caught in the deep by Nic Maddinson who took the superb diving catch.
Two balls later, Sam Harper was bowled for a duck, giving Jackson Bird his second wicket and his first BBL double-wicket maiden. Former Stars captain Cameron White only managed to score 1 run before he misjudged a slower ball from Marcus Stoinis, and was subsequently bowled. The Renegades finished the powerplay on 4-39. Cooper and Nabi put on a decent partnership until Cooper went high looking for a boundary, but was caught just short of the rope by Maddinson. Mohammad Nabi made 28 before he was caught down the ground by Evan Gulbis, giving Zampa his first wicket of the night. The tail couldn’t hold on despite some late boundaries, and the Renegades were bowled out for 121. Marcus Stoinis finished with the best figures of 3-19.
With the Bat
Nabi struck early for the Renegades, bowling Ben Dunk out for a duck on the second ball of the innings. Handscomb made 8 runs before hit one straight to Cameron White. It was up to the legendary combination of Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell to steady the ship, and while the pair looked promising early, Maxwell was run out just after the powerplay. Nic Maddinson stepped up and played his role well, allowing Stoinis to reach his 50 runs. Maddinson was caught in the deep trying to go for his second six of the innings, but was followed by DJ Bravo, whose quick-fire 17 runs of 9 balls saw the Stars to their fourth win of BBL|08. Stoinis, who scored 70 off 65, batted from first to last ball, and his superb all-round effort earnt him player of the match honours.
