The Melbourne Stars have put together an excellent all-round performance to defeat the Hobart Hurricanes at the MCG.
The night started brightly for the Stars with David Hussey winning the toss again and deciding to field first.
The Stars brought in Scott Boland for Ben Hilfenhaus and the Hurricanes dropped Jake Reed for former Star Clive Rose.
Glenn Maxwell opened the bowling and despite starting with two wides, claimed the wicket of Hobart skipper Tim Paine off the third legitimate ball of the innings, caught by James Faulkner at mid on.
The following two overs also featured wickets; Kumar Sangakkara who was caught behind off Michael Beer and Ben Dunk was run out by John Hastings after a mix up with George Bailey.
Bailey was the only Hurricane to look comfortable at the crease, scoring 55 off 40 with lots of lofted drives and flicks.
Adam Zampa claimed two crucial wickets in his fourth over to finish his spell with figures of 2-18.
Jon Wells was stumped by Peter Handscomb which was closely followed by clean bowling Bailey, at which point Hobart slumped to 6-99.
Some fabulous death bowling from Hastings and Scott Boland ensured no late runs were leaked, even to the big hitting Darren Sammy.
Boland finished with tidy figures of 2-26 and was on a hat-trick with one ball to go, after claiming the wickets of Cameron Boyce and Sam Rainbird.
Shaun Tait survived the hat-trick ball but was run out but Hussey attempting a sneaky run, giving the Stars a team hat trick.
The Stars batting innings saw Maxwell and Luke Wright combine for a 99-run partnership, both finishing with unbeaten half-centuries.
Named Man-of-the-Match, Maxwell’s unbeaten 56 came off 32 balls and included three fours and three sixes.
Backing up his unbeaten century against the Renegades, Wright’s 51* not out came off 41 balls and included five fours and one six.
The Stars will next face cross-town rivals the Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
